4 Questions to Ask Before Converting Your Tub Into a Shower

A tub-to-shower conversion is a great way to make your bathroom a safer and more accessible place for everyone. Replacing the tub area with a walk-in shower allows you to accommodate everyone’s needs, including family members with limited mobility. But before you plan for this particular bathroom renovation project, you must first ask yourself some questions.

1. “Who will be using the bathroom?” Always make sure to consider the ones who will use the bathroom the most. If you live in a household with small children, you may have to keep the tub, especially if it’s the only one in your home. Bathing them is easier in the tub, and converting it into a shower can pose a challenge when it comes to their bath time. However, if you have a limited space and you find that the tub is already obsolete, then you may proceed with the tub-to-shower conversion. This is especially true if you have an elderly family member or a loved one with a mobility issue.

2. “Are you planning on selling your home soon?” A shower can sometimes be a deal-breaker to potential buyers of your home. If you’re planning on selling your home soon, it’s best to stick with the tub, especially if you are targeting families with children. To further enhance your home’s resale value, you may want to consider adding a shower to complement the existing bathtub.

3. “Are there obstructions that can make it difficult to install?” Shower and tub replacement professionals recommend checking first the area around the existing bathtub before you plan the conversion. See if there is anything surrounding it that can make the conversion difficult to do. The things you would want to look out for are windows, cabinets, partition walls and other built-in items in your bathroom. Getting rid of these obstructions to accommodate the shower can add to the final cost of your conversion.

4. “Does it fit your budget?” A big consideration when deciding on any bathroom remodel is your budget. A tub-to-shower conversion can actually be somewhat affordable, depending on your plans and the layout of the space. To know the budget that you will be needing, you can consult your local contractor for an estimate.
