Why You Shouldn’t Go Cheap on a Bathroom Remodel

bathroom remodel is a serious commitment. It requires an investment of your time, dedication, and money. That’s why professionals advise thinking about and planning it thoroughly before starting your project.

A good remodel is not cheap, so it might be tempting for a homeowner to cut some costs by relying on DIY or inexperienced workers, or maybe some cheap knockoffs instead of top-quality materials. But you always get what you pay for, so if you cut corners, you are likely to end up wasting time and money because those cheap materials won’t last and cheap labor won’t get it right.

This is exactly the reason why you shouldn’t even consider hiring a contractor who gives you an unusually low bid for your bath renovation project.

Compare Bids

Start off by asking for quotes from at least three different contractors for your bathroom renovation. It’s important to have more than one because you want to be able to make comparisons and get a good idea of the kind of money involved in such a project.

If you receive a quote without the contractor ever discussing the project thoroughly with you, that means they have a generic quote, and that’s not likely to give you a realistic estimate.

If you receive several quotes from different contractors, and one of them is unusually cheap, it might be tempting to hire that contractor. Be wary of such low prices. Ask the contractor to explain the quote to you in detail. Find out what materials they’ll be using, whether they will be using subcontractors, and how much experience their workers have.

Choose Quality

Of course, if the contractor is going to use cheap materials, just say thank you and move on. You will encounter problems if you choose to work with them.

  • Materials – Subpar materials are not as good as authentic and top-quality materials. They often look cheap too. The real test is longevity, though, and subpar materials cannot outlast good-quality ones. You’ll end up wasting your money on the cheap remodel, only to spend even more money correcting your mistake.
  • Designs and Finishes – Great design is part of your investment. You have an idea of what you would like to achieve, but going cheap will not help you with that. You want someone with plenty of knowledge and experience to work on your remodel instead of one with limited experience and no creativity.
  • Value – Bathroom remodels tend to raise the value of the entire home. But if your remodel is cheap, it’s probably going to have the opposite effect.
  • Effect on You – You want to be happy each time you look at your newly remodeled bathroom. You want to feel joy and contentment each time you use it. If you go cheap, you’re likely to feel only regret. This is your home, so it has to reflect your personality and what you really want.
